Lost & Found

Description

Here's the decription from Michael: A small book of blank cream-colored pages with light grey ruling in which I can record ideas. The very first page reads “In case of loss, please return to:” and “As a reward: $.” In the back of the book there is a folder to store loose pages made out of thicker, cream-colored paper on the top and black vinyl fabric that folds over on the sides. In the middle of the book rests a silky, dark grey bookmark glued to the binding of the book. The exterior is matte black with a texture to make it look like leather. A black elastic band prevents it from fanning out in my bag when not in use.

Design Process

After getting the description, I started to imagine the overall looking of the book. Then I drew rough sketches to determine how would I present it. According to my sketch, I divided the whole thing into different components and made a list of them since Michael’s description was very detailed. After that, I tried to figure out the sequence to build these components and started working on them. When I was creating Michael’s book, I kept checking the reference on p5js and it helped me a lot.

Reflection

My partner provided me with detailed description so it was not hard to figure out the appearance of the book. I didn’t struggle with what it would look like since everything was clear. But later, I found out that I have to decide in what form I was going to present the book. Was it open since he mentioned the page color and the ruling? Or it should be closed so I can focus on the matte black exterior. I think these may be problems that designers may encounter with a lot and think over. Also, some details in the description were challenging especially for the sentence in the first page and the texture of the exterior that I’m still struggling with. Hope one day I would be able to solve these problems as I keep studying in this course.
